Prevention Tips

Even though there is no way to eliminate cancer risk entirely, you can do things to lessen the risk. Maintain a healthy weight and get regular exercise. A 30-minute daily walk could make all the difference. Eat a balanced diet and eat less processed foods. Avoid tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. Apply sunscreen daily, even in the winter. Dangerous UV rays can cause damage even on overcast days. Avoid too much sun exposure, and steer clear of tanning beds. Some vaccines can reduce your cancer risk. For instance, the HPV vaccine can decrease your risk of cervical, oral, anal, and other genital cancers. The Hepatitis B vaccine can reduce your risk of liver cancer.

Most importantly, get screened. Regular screenings can identify problems much earlier and lead to more successful treatment. Talk to your doctor about how often you should be screened for different types of cancer.

Cancer is scary, and no one wants to think that they may fall victim. Being proactive in your lifestyle choices, visiting your doctor regularly, and taking care of your body, both inside and out, can help protect you and decrease your cancer risk.
